Annual Report 2012-2013

From the Principal On Eagles’ Wings Dear SBA Friends and Family,

Development

As the Interim Principal at St. Benedict at Auburndale, it is my honor to welcome all back to a new school year. All years are special, but this one is a milestone for us – it’s our 25th year of building something great. For those who are new to our family, we were saddened by the departure of George Valadie. Mr. Valadie and his family served at SBA for 14 years and served well. We wish them the very best as they embark on a new journey and get to head back “home” to Chattanooga. SBA students and alums all realize that the SBA community or “nest” is a family that you come to, leave from and to which you can always return. We are very proud of our seven alums currently members of our faculty. We have several more serving in volunteer and part-time positions in our fine arts and athletic departments. In addition to the alums on faculty, we have 32 faculty, staff and administration who are either current or alumni parents. SBA is a family, and as with all of us in our own family – we laugh together, cry together, weather all sorts of issues and hope together. And, in the end, we worship together, pray together and, hopefully, inspire and serve others together. The legacy bestowed on us by our predecessors is one we are called to follow with pride, values, integrity and no apologies for providing our students a solid faith, based on the life of Jesus Christ and the Gospel values. We are committed to continuing the conscious effort to promote, invite and inspire each student to be a living example of Christian values whether in the classroom, theater, athletic venue, parking lots, dining hall, movie theater, parties, etc. St. Benedict is a place where Gospel values are modeled and lived. Without the students and families of The Auburndale School and St. Benedict at Auburndale 4K-12 we would not be able to be who we are today - St. Benedict at Auburndale Catholic High School. We’re so thankful for all who have played a part, large or small, in building our tradition. Although this will be my first year in the “Principal’s” office, my 27 years at Auburndale/St. Benedict at Auburndale have been immensely rewarding, thanks to the tremendous dedication and support of our students, faculty, staff, alumni, benefactors and community supporters. Together, we are who we are today and will continue to build something great. Sondra Morris Interim Principal

From the Editor There’s an old saying, or I think a line from a song in Porgy and Bess, “Summertime, When the living is easy.” That’s not the case around SBA, particularly this year. With our change in principal, we have seen so many changes. Change is good, they also say, so the administration staff has been busy enacting these changes. Over the next few weeks you will get to see and hear about them. In addition to a new principal, we have some new personnel, new coaches, some personnel moving to other positions, faculty additions, safety and facilities enhancements and much more. We bid a fond farewell to Nancy and George Valadie, but we welcome Sondra Morris and all the others new to the campus and in new positions. It’s an exciting time at SBA, but it’s always been this way. That’s what makes us such a dynamic educational institution, building on tradition with a Catholic heart. Stay with On Eagles’ Wings and our social media to keep up with all the exciting news. Sharon Masterson, Editor Director of Communications & Sports Information

Eagle Club $5,000+

25 Years Founded in 1988, St. Benedict at Auburndale is soaring into its 25th anniversary. Of course, The Auburndale School was founded in 1966 and we consider that date our true beginning, but the Catholic Diocese of Memphis purchased the Auburndale School on January 14, 1988 and St. Benedict at Auburndale began, as we know it, that fall. We have experienced so much change and growth since then, but one thing has not changed….the support of our parents. In 1966 and in 1988 there was not an Annual Report like this to say thank you, but there should have been. For whenever your gifts of time and treasures are given, please know that WE THANK YOU.

If you haven’t checked it out yet, it is definitely worth a look! www.sbaeagles.org/experience

To all our SBA families and friends If you’re a television fan at all, you’re used to the phrase “Season Finale,” that last show just before summer when the networks try to leave you hanging, hopeful you’ll be back in the Fall, if for no other reason than to see how that hang-on-your-seat plot line will end. No such drama here. Rather, consider our family’s move to Chattanooga as ‘two familiar characters’ just stepping out of the series – not killed off thankfully – but just a piece of a long-running success that has grown ever more popular, regardless of the players who have and will come and go. I know that for two reasons – first, this is God’s show, not ours. Helping these students grow in mind, body and soul – striving for Harvard and Heaven as we say. But I can also say it with the greatest of confidence because of what this Annual Report really says. It’s our public thank you to the many who believe in St. Benedict and all that happens here. Please accept my thanks one more time for everything you have done for our school, these students, their teachers and yes, their principal.

George Valadie SBA Principal 1999-2013

You have made us a better school. You have made the mission easier. You have helped us do God’s work here on earth … what can be better than that when we stand before St. Peter to review the “moments” of our lives. Thank you all! George Valadie

I was actually a student at Auburndale when the Diocese bought the school from the Smith family. In the beginning, there was definitely a transition stage, but thankfully in the short years to follow, there was a feeling of peace as everyone found their “fit.” Back then, I didn’t appreciate what was being done for the future of our school. Now, I realize it is something to look back on with gratitude. We wouldn’t be here today without Auburndale and we wouldn’t be here today without the Diocese, so our history is important. The 1966 families are important and the 1988 families are important, so thank you to all who have been a part of our school’s journey… I know I say thank you to a sickening degree in my articles and letters, and yes, that is my job, but I am also just a thankful person. I see where people don’t have to do what they do, and they don’t have to give what they give. The numbers in this report are unbelievable to me. The generosity of our friends and families is overwhelming – and the thing is – it’s a culture. I feel it and see it in the halls every day. Our school is truly a giving school. Our students are truly servant leaders. They learn it every which way they go. They learn it at church, they learn it in the classroom and they learn it from you. They are also thankful people. They know what a blessing it is to be able to attend SBA, and if they were each given the opportunity to write an article for this magazine and say thank you, they would. So on behalf of the students and the staff of St. Benedict at Auburndale – THANK YOU for everything. For then…and now.

About Our Faith

On Eagles’ Wings

Seeking Truth, Love and Liberty

knowing Christ, “Immanuel” and “God-with-us,” is there. Lastly, we must die to sin so that Christ may reign. “He must increase; I must decrease” (John 3:30). It is countercultural, but this is the wisdom of going into the caves.

By Khira Rotty Director of Spiritual Affairs

This is what we seek to offer at St. Benedict at Auburndale High School-a cave. A cave where people can escape the pressures and temptations of the world and allow Christ to form them in the ways of Veritas, Caritas and Libertas. A cave where they can spend time communing with Christ in the sacraments and prayer through Adoration, Mass, the Sacrament of Confession, the Stations of the Cross and a Chapel that is open all day, every day. A cave where they can allow Mary to assist them in their journey to Christ through the recitation of the Rosary, asking her to pray for our intentions, crowning her as Queen in May and wearing Miraculous Medals. A cave where not only minds are filled with knowledge, but also hearts to be changed by providing retreats (both for the faculty and students), guest speakers, observance of Church feast days and seasons (Ash Wednesday, blessing of throats) and daily prayer. A cave that provides instruction on the dignity of the human person as revealed by God.

There was a young man who had what most people desire. He was a wealthy, good-looking man with a great education. He lived in the most influential city, and had a promising future as a successful businessman. He was in love with a beautiful woman. What more could he want? Veritas, Caritas and Libertas-Truth, Love and Liberty! As a young man in Rome, he began to experience truth, love and liberty as the world offered it. However, he often felt unfulfilled, and he was strongly tempted to sin. He knew he needed to seek holiness instead. He needed Christ, who is Truth, Love and the One who will set you Free (John 8:32). Who was this young man? St. Benedict. What did he do? As Pope, St. Gregory the Great recorded of Benedict’s life, “… giving over his books, and forsaking his father’s house and wealth, with a mind only to serve God, he sought for some place where he might attain to the desire of his holy purpose; and in this sort he departed (from Rome), instructed with learned ignorance and furnished with unlearned wisdom.” Most drastically, he went to live in a cave, where he knew that God would form him.

The cave is not for isolation, but formation and transformation. We are called to go forth from the cave. Christ and St. Benedict reveal this to us by the fact that they proclaimed the Kingdom of God to all whom they encountered; by the fact that they established places of prayer and worship, schools; by the fact that they tended to the poor. Therefore, St. Benedict at Auburndale High School should also be a cave where people bring themselves to Christ and then bring Christ to others. There are several major ways that we see the fruits of the formation within this cave: the numbers of students who attend the annual March for Life, the many works of mercy provided to the greater community and the numerous accomplishments of the alumni.

St. Benedict was a wise young man for two reasons. First, he was humble enough to recognize his many weaknesses. Second, he was courageous enough to detach himself from the world. With this humility and courage, he developed a great formula to know veritas, caritas and libertas. As Venerable Fulton Sheen said, “There have been only two classes of people who have heard the cry of Christ and who have found Christ: The very simple and the very learned. … But never the man with one book; never the man who thinks he knows. Only the simple and only the wise find Christ because both are humble; both acknowledge either ignorance or the limitations of human knowledge, which is humility.” St. Benedict is a profound example and a beautiful role model for us. He can teach us humility and courage.

As students, faculty, administration and families of St. Benedict, we must acknowledge our weaknesses. We must humbly acknowledge them and we must courageously seek daily transformation. Please pray that St. Benedict continues to be a cave that connects us to Christ the Lord and makes us ready for His mission. As always, the whole community remains in my prayers, especially in the Masses offered on campus.

In reflecting on the Gospels, we notice that Christ too spent time in the caves. The three major instances are Mary’s womb (a type of cave), the manger and the tomb. All three places reveal to us what a cave can do if we have the humility and courage to resort to it. First, we must totally surrender ourselves (as Christ did) to God and Mary so as to allow them to form us. Secondly, we must humbly approach the cave

St. Benedict, Pray for us!

About Our Faith

On Eagles’ Wings

A favored tradition at SBA is the crowning of Mary as our Queen and Mother. Doing honors this year were the following seniors – color guard Zach Favorite, crowners Abby Fehrenbacher and Alex Thompson and color guard Trey Haff.

SBA Hosts Visitors of Faith!

The Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, in town in April for their Annual Friar Fest at Holy Rosary Church, stopped by SBA for some games, sing-alongs, witnessing and prayer. The SBA students welcomed them by getting in to the action and loaned a few SBA ties so the friars could feel right at home. This dynamic consecrated religious order ministers throughout the country, particularly in larger urban cities.

Riders with “BIKING FOR BABIES” came through Memphis in July on their journey from New Orleans to Chicago witnessing for the unborn and their mothers. After Mass at St. Ann-Bartlett, they spent the night at SBA. The riders were so impressed with SBA and our Hall of Tribute to the March for Life Trip we take each year. The group hopes to be back through Memphis next year and is eager to stop in at SBA. Check out their site relating the story of their support of pregnancy centers, www.bikingforbabies.com.

Here are our dates for this year: November 13, February 5 and April 16. The signing “parties” are held immediately after school on those dates in the front foyer outside the main office. At right is the NCAA calendar; please note the appropriate schedule for each sport. Students and/ or parents should contact their coach and Sports Information Director Sharon Masterson at [emailprotected]; 260-2871 to set up a signing party.

SPOTLIGHT Andrea Mason Ray, SBA-Class of 2002 Zambia, here we come By Andrea Mason Ray On Eagles’ Wings recently learned of alum Andrea Mason Ray’s plans to leave Memphis for three years for mission work in Zambia. Following is Andrea’s story about her journey culminating in this decision. The Rays now have two children, Anna and, just recently born, Jonah. Be sure to log onto her site and read about her family’s walk in faith. God’s blessings to Andrea and her family – we are so proud of you!

I graduated from St. Benedict in 2002. I then graduated from the University of Memphis and had every intention to leave Memphis as soon as possible. However, God had different plans for me. I didn’t have peace in my heart about moving so I held off. Then I met Nick in 2008, we were married in 2009, our daughter Anna came along in 2010. Nick worked as a third grade teacher at Lausanne and I found my dream job at Speak Creative. Life was perfect and leaving Memphis was no longer a high priority or

After a phone conversation with one of my clients (Heart of the Bride Ministries) a whole new opportunity came up... three years in Zambia serving street children. Over 250 kids live on the streets with no one to care for them or even look them in the eye. These orphans have been abandoned and are simply seeking for someone to love them, without judgment.

Alumni News In Zambia, the average life expectancy is about 42 years and the average annual income is a little over $400/year. With numbers like that who would have hope in a future? Why would anyone believe that they were thought of, loved or cared about? These children need to know there is hope, they need to see love in tangible ways.

needed to rent out and finding a sending church, we were ready to officially begin raising support. At first, we were faced with $60,000 for a start-up fund to get there and then $3,650/month committed for the three years we would be there. Blessing after blessing and significant progress was made.

Last summer Nick and I took a trip to Kitwe, Zambia to meet the team and learn more about the work we “might” be doing with these children. We were blown away to see the transformations taking place. Boys who lived on the streets, over time, were positively contributing to their community and showing other street children to have hope. The team on the ground was making positive changes, one child at a time. Through education, discipleship, life skills training, love and patience, these children were seeing tangible love and faith in an otherwise dark place. After about a week, Nick and I knew this was where we needed to be. After huge hurdles like $50,000 in student loans, a home we

We are currently at a little over 55% committed and we are seeking people, family, friends, strangers, anyone who wants to be a part of our journey! We will be making a difference in the lives of so many children in Zambia and we are so excited to share it with our family, friends and supporters.
