Nacho Elvira holds on to win Soudal Open in Belgium for second European tour title
- AP
Spanish golfer Nacho Elvira has parred his final seven holes to hold on for a one-stroke victory at the Soudal Open in Belgium and clinch his second title on the European tour. Elvira started the final round with a four-shot lead, closed with an even-par 71 and was almost reeled in by Nicolas Norgaard. The Dane had a birdie putt from about 12 feet at No. 18 to force a playoff. Norgaard missed it right and had to settle for a 68 and a tie for second place with home favorite Thomas Pieters (66) and Romain Langasque, who birdied the last for a 68. Elvira’s other win came at the Cazoo Open in Wales in 2021.

Macron begins the first state visit to Germany by a French president in 24 years
- AP
President Emmanuel Macron has arrived in Germany for the first state visit by a French head of state in 24 years. The three-day trip is meant to underline the strong ties between the European Union’s traditional leading powers. The visit that started Sunday was originally meant to take place last July but was postponed at the last minute due to rioting in France following the killing of a 17-year-old by police. While Macron is a frequent visitor to Germany as Paris and Berlin try to coordinate their positions on EU and foreign policy, this is the first state visit with full pomp since Jacques Chirac came in 2000.

California evangelical seminary ponders changes that would make it more welcoming to LGBTQ students
- By DEEPA BHARATH - Associated Press
An evangelical seminary in Pasadena, California, is considering revisions to its sexual standards. According to a draft of those changes obtained by The Associated Press, these changes could mean more freedom for LGBTQ+ students at Fuller Theological Seminary. The seminary's president formed a task force to look into the college's sexual standards after a senior administrator was fired in January for refusing sign the unrevised document. Two students filed lawsuits in 2019 and 2020 after they were expelled for being in same-sex marriages. A spokesperson for the seminary has said no solid proposal has come before the board for a vote and that the revisions are still being discussed.

Here's what every key witness said at Donald Trump’s hush money trial. Closing arguments are coming
- By MICHAEL R. SISAK, JENNIFER PELTZ and JAKE OFFENHARTZ - Associated Press
Testimony is over at Donald Trump’s criminal trial in New York after a parade of 22 witnesses, including a p*rn actor, tabloid publisher and White House insiders. Prosecutors and Trump’s lawyers are scheduled to make their closing arguments on Tuesday. After that, it'll be up to 12 jurors to decide whether prosecutors have proved beyond a reasonable doubt that Trump illegally falsified records at his company as part of an effort to keep embarrassing stories from becoming public during his 2016 presidential campaign. He's pleaded not guilty. A conviction could come down to how the jurors interpret the testimony they heard and which witnesses they found credible.

In one North Carolina county, it's 'growth, growth, growth.' But will Biden reap the benefit?
- By JOSH BOAK - Associated Press
Just 81,000 people live in rural Chatham County in North Carolina, where there are more than 1,000 farms. But life is changing. The new Wolfspeed factory that overlooks I-64 will soon produce advanced wafers for computer chips. Automaker Vinfast is scheduled to open a factory next year. Both projects stem in large part from incentives that President Joe Biden signed into law. The Democrat has campaigned on how his policies helped pump hundreds of billions of dollars in private and federal investment into companies. But so far this election year, the investments haven’t significantly swayed a public concerned about inflation.

Aid group says over 100 people killed in 2 weeks of fighting in a Sudanese city
- BY SAMY MAGDY - Associated Press
An international aid group says more than two weeks of fighting between Sudan’s military and a notorious paramilitary group over a major city in the western Darfur region killed at least 123 people. It said Sunday that the fighting in el-Fasher, the provincial capital of North Darfur province, also wounded more than 930 people. El-Fasher has become the center of the conflict between the military and the Rapid Support Forces. The city is the last stronghold that is still held by the military in the sprawling Darfur region. Sudan’s conflict began in April last year when soaring tensions between the leaders of the military and the RSF exploded into open fighting in the capital, Khartoum, and elsewhere in the country.

The 2024 French Open is underway at Roland Garros. Play in the first round has started on Sunday after a ceremony to inaugurate the new retractable roof above Court Suzanne Lenglen. There is no rain in the forecast for Day 1, so that might be the only use of the movable cover atop the second-largest stadium at the tournament facility. The main arena, Court Philippe Chatrier, has had its retractable roof since the 2020 tournament. Among the players scheduled to play Sunday are four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka and two-time major winner Carlos Alcaraz.

Yemen’s Houthis freed over 100 war prisoners, the Red Cross says
- By SAMY MAGDY - Associated Press
The International Committee of the Red Cross says the Houthis rebels in Yemen have released more than 100 war prisoners linked to the country’s long-running conflict. It says release took place Sunday morning in the Houthi-held capital of Sanaa. The unilateral release came more than a year after Yemen’s warring sides freed more than 800 prisoners in a major exchange in the country in April last year. Thousands of people are still believed to be held as prisoners of war since the conflict erupted in 2014.

Sunak’s plan to make 18-year-olds do national service grabs attention on UK election trail
- By JILL LAWLESS - Associated Press
All 18-year-olds in Britain will have to perform a year of mandatory military or civilian national service if the governing Conservative Party wins the July 4 national election. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak pledged to bring back a form of national service for the first time since 1960. Under the plan, a small minority of 18-year-olds would spend 12 months in the military. The rest would spend one weekend a month working for charities, community groups or public organizations. It was unclear how it would be made mandatory. Sunak is seeking to energize his election campaign after a faltering start. The opposition Labour Party dismissed the plan as a gimmick. Polls currently put Labour well ahead of the Conservatives.

Aid trucks begin entering Gaza under agreement with Egypt to bypass Rafah
- By WAFAA SHURAFA and SAMY MAGDY - Associated Press
Aid trucks have begun entering Gaza from southern Israel through a new agreement to bypass the Rafah crossing with Egypt after Israeli forces seized the Palestinian side of it earlier this month. Egypt refuses to reopen its side of the Rafah crossing until control of the Gaza side is handed back to Palestinians. But under U.S. and Israeli pressure it agreed to divert traffic through Israel’s Kerem Shalom crossing, Gaza’s main cargo terminal. That crossing has been largely inaccessible because of fighting linked to Israel’s offensive in Rafah. Israel says it has allowed hundreds of trucks to enter, but United Nations agencies say it is usually too dangerous to retrieve the aid on the other side.

Newgarden and two Penske teammates will be on the front row when the race begins.
