A Minnesota city and the U.S. Department of Justice have reached an agreement addressing allegations the city discriminated against mentally ill residents in enforcing an anti-crime law

  • By JOHN HANNA - Associated Press

A Minnesota city has agreed not to disclose private medical information about renters with mental health issues and to pay $175,000 to resolve a complaint from the federal government that the city discriminated against mentally ill residents in enforcing an anti-crime law.

The U.S. Department of Justice on Tuesday announced its agreement with the city of Anoka, a medium-sized suburb of Minneapolis. It addresses allegations that the city violated the federal Americans with Disabilities Act by improperly pressuring landlords to evict tenants with mental health issues over multiple police or emergency calls to their addresses. The DOJ also filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday against the city, but that case won't go forward if a judge approves the agreement.

Fire at a baby care center kills 6 infants in India's capital, a fire officer says

  • AP

A fire erupted in a baby care center in India's capital and killed six infants. Fire officer Suresh Kumar says six newborns were rescued from the blaze Saturday night and taken to a nearby hospital in Vivek Vihar district in east Delhi. The fire on the first floor of the center was extinguished in an hour. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Fires are common in India, where builders and residents often flout building laws and safety codes.

Pac-12 goes dark: conference baseball tournament marks end of an era

  • By JOHN MARSHALL - AP Sports Writer

Waves of fans streamed into Scottsdale Stadium an hour before the start to see the Pac-12 baseball championship game. They got a dose of history with it. With Arizona and Southern California atop the marquee, the undercurrent of Saturday night’s game swirled around what could be a finality: the end of the Pac-12 Conference as we know it. The Pac-12 will splinter after this school year, with 10 teams headed to new conferences and two teams clinging to the remnants of the once-proud conference. Washington State and Oregon State may find a way to help keep the conference alive, but it won't be the same even if it does continue.
