Sunday, June 18, 2006 THE LOMPOC RECORD A3 Central Supreme Court still mulling over Alcox case Man convicted of killing local innkeeper awaits word on possibility of a new trial BY QUINTIN CUSHNER SENIOR STAFF WRITER Joel Alcox will remain at Santa Barbara County Jail while the California Supreme Court weighs whether to reconsider his conviction for killing a Lompoc innkeeper more than 20 years ago, a judge said Friday. While living in Massachusetts, Gail became a genealogist and began research on her own and Stan's family; with five ancestral lines to the Mayflower, she had deep American roots. She became a member of the American Antiquarian Society and the New England Genealogical Society. She tracked down the stories of lost relatives with the tenacity and curiosity of a good investigative reporter. Stan accompanied her on field trips to search public records and burial grounds in such places as Martha's Vineyard, Salt Lake City, Central California, and Indiana. She documented her research in extensive pages of computerized notes and family trees which she posted on Geneaology.com.

Once settled in California, she joined the Santa Barbara Genealogical Society, and was published in its journal Ancestors West. The need to organize, document, and chart vast amounts of genealogical data, led her to the computer. She was smitten by the computer as a tool but it became for her a doorway to the world. She spent endless hours researching, instant messaging, playing games, and surfing. She was duly proud of her technical know-how and her webpage: Tiger She managed her household local area network, kept Stan's laptop humming, and generously provided technical assistance to friends and family.

Stan, a lifelong golfer, introduced Gail to the sport in 1986 when they retired, to Lompoc. Ted was born May 9th 1960 in Pasadena, CA to Leslie and Frances Jones Steinwehr. He Moved from Monrovia to Santa Barbara in 1985 and worked: building Radon fishing boats. He most recently worked as a of solid surfaces for Tops Unlimited in Santa Barbara. He was known for perfecting the solid surface thermoforming technique and managed Shower Shapes (a division of GW Surfaces) in Goleta. Ted loved the outdoors, especially camping, fishing, exploring caves, and motorcycle riding.

He also loved watching the local missile launches. He was a loving husband, father, son, grandfather and friend. Born on January 22, 1935, Gail was raised in Memphis Tennessee, graduated from Miss Hutchison's School for Girls and East High School. She met. Stan at Memphis State and was married December 18, 1953. Gail and Stan were partners in a journey of 27 years with the U.S. Air Force, serving our country through those anxious years of the Cold War.

Gail orchestrated 21 household moves with Stan, her three daughters, numerous cats, dogs, kittens, puppies, birds and even horses. Their assignments included: Alabama, Mississippi, Ohio, Texas, Nebraska, South Dakota, California, Hawaii and France. She and Lynn and their 5 children made a home in Seattle while Stan was in Vietnam, and later, she kept the home fires burning. in Nebraska while Stan was in Korea. Many of Gail's early interests revolved around our family and the opportunities she found in each locale.

In Hawaii, she was a Brownie leader, learned to love Chinese food, and made sure the girls learned to Hula. In Texas, Gail rekindled a girlhood love of horseback riding and introduced the girls to the sport. In Seattle, we all learned to downhill ski. Later, in South Dakota, she deftly convinced Stan to acquire horses for the family, one by one beginning with a Shetland pony and ending with 7 horses. She assisted with the 4-H club, supported the girls to ride, show, and rodeo their horses, and did so herself.

Memorable weekends were spent trail riding with friends and family in the Black Hills. She was the cool Mom everyone wanted. Over the years she also enjoyed reading, oil painting, sewing, needlecrafts, and music (piano, guitar, and sing- Country Club. To both their surprise, she quickly excelled as she timed her swing to the first three notes of the song "Moon. Gail played team golf and won local tournaments including the VCC President's Cup in 1990.

While practicing alone one day on the 13th hole, Gail SAID she made a hole-in-one. With no witness, it could not be properly recorded but she regaled us with the story for months afterwards. Gail and Stan enjoyed years of great times golfing and traveling with friends. Her most recent passion was making dollhouse miniatures. Miniaturists often specialize and so did she her flowers and tiny books are exquisite! Her miniature pieces are not only beautiful but also imbued with her sense of humor.

Becoming a proficient digital photographer enabled her to share and sell her work. Among the structures Gail built and outfitted is a Victorian dollhouse for Kelsey and a fishing cabin in the woods for Stan, complete with rustic details like a rocking chair on the porch. She was a member the National Association of Miniature Enthusiasts and founding member of the Gold Coast Miniaturists. She made fast friends with a small international group of miniaturists "little dubbing themselves the Steel Magnolias or they use the Internet to "talk" daily. She loved to gather with them at National meetings and conferences to drink wine, trade miniatures, and sharpen skills.

Gail's proudest accomplishment was nurturing, teaching, and loving her three daughters, four grandchildren, and husband. She cherished her home in the Village and her crazy girl friends. She loved to sit in her atrium, drink coffee, and smoke Kools always with a creative project in her lap. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and good friend who will always be missed. missed.

Ted was preceded in death by his father. Ted passed away Friday May 19th 2006 at his home in Lompoc. He is survived by his wife of 15 years Stephanie Steinwehr; sons, Ted Steinwehr, I1, Joshua Habisch, Brian (Casey) Fowler; daughter, Tami Fowler; mother, Frances (Steve) Nestle; step-mother, Donna Steinwehr; mother father in-law, Ralph and Irene McCollumn; sisters, Linda (Jim) Thompson, Linda (Glen)Tebo; brothers, Joseph Steinwehr, John Holt, Ken (Lisa) Holt; grandchildren, Luis Monroy, Siera Alysa Weathers, Deegan Fowler; aunts, Connie Marji Huntington; cousins, Laura, Amber and Leiah McKernan, and several nephews and nieces. Memorial contributions may be made in Ted's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St.
